Taruithorn's 25th anniversary May. 21st, 2014 @ 06:28 pm
Greetings, one and all!

In the summer of 2015, Taruithorn is going to be celebrating its 25th anniversary! In order to mark this momentous occasion, the society's current committee is planning a party of special magnificence, to take place sometime early Trinity Term of that year.

As is appropriate for such an important anniversary, we are hoping to see as many old members as possible. We're aware that a lot of people will have dropped off the mailing list over the years, so we are hoping that you all will forward this email to any old members they know who might be interested in the Anniversary. In addition, we've created a Facebook page for the event to help people reconnect and spread the word, which you can sign up for at https://www.facebook.com/events/624704827620998/. Further information will be disseminated through the new anniversary mailing list. In order to subscribe to this, just send a blank email to taruith-anniversary-subscribe@maillist.ox.ac.uk*. Also, please check the new society webpage for the event at http://users.ox.ac.uk/~tolksoc/anniversary.html.

Please be aware that we are still at a very early stage of planning, and the details here are provisional and subject to change. If anyone has any ideas of suggestions to contribute, please email the new anniversary maillist (taruith-anniversary@maillist.ox.ac.uk). Alternatively, anyone living in or around Oxford who would like to be actively involved in organising the event could join the anniversary committee. To do so, just send a request to the society email account (taruithorn@gmail.com). Also, please note that in order to make the anniversary celebrations as enjoyable as possible, there will be no banquet event in 2015.

Location – we are currently planning to host the event in the illustrious settings of the gardens and buildings of Christ Church College
Timing – the Anniversary Party will take place on Saturday of the 2nd, 3rd or 4th week in Trinity Term, 2015 (Saturday the 9th, 16th or 23rd of May)
Afternoon Garden Party - the day will start in the mid-afternoon, in one of the gardens of Christ Church. There will be food, drink, games, dancing, old friends and general merriment aplenty. An indoor space will be available in case of bad weather.
Speaker(s) - We intend to ask some of our past Presidents to tell us about the Society in their day, that we may all remember and see how things have changed. Additionally, we hope to attract an external speaker from the Tolkien world - who, precisely, is yet to be ascertained.
Dinner - in the evening, we will move into the buildings of Christ Church for a buffet dinner and to generally continue the evening.
Food - in order to maximise the number of members, past and present, who may attend the event, and to minimise the price for all, we intend to ask that at least some of those attending sign up to bring a dish, suitable either for the gardens in the afternoon or the buffet dinner. Some food will be provided in addition to this. Drinks will be included in the ticket cost (discounted tickets will be available for non-drinkers).
Entertainment - Not yet decided, but there should be a wide variety - suggestions welcome! Ideas include various games, dancing, a Celeidh band, having a slideshow of old Society photos, perhaps looking through some old materials (Old Miruvors etc.) from our Archive, and of course the general hilarity that always ensues when we get together.

We hope to see you all there! Tenna’ento lye omenta!

Joseph Bartram

President-elect (Gandalf the Grey)

*Note that after you send the email, you will receive an email entitled "confirm subscribe to taruith-anniversary@maillist.ox.ac.uk", to which you must reply to be subscribed. This message often seems to fall into spam filters, so remember to check your Spam folder for it! If for any reason this doesn't work, please email the Society account (taruithorn@gmail.com) and we’ll add you directly.

Taruith Members Feb. 22nd, 2010 @ 06:23 pm
So since a lot of us are on LJ, but some peoples' profiles are incredibly cryptic, I thought that it might be a good idea to make a post where we all comment with our name (probably just first name unless that's going to cause confusion), so that we all know who we are, and can find more of each other too!

Last day of Oxonmoot booking Sep. 4th, 2009 @ 02:18 pm
Just to remind everyone that this is the last day on which online booking is possible for the Tolkien Society's Oxonmoot event. Details are here:

» Banquet
A big thank you to everyone who was involved in last night's banquet. adaese and I really enjoyed ourselves.

I have also set up LJ and Facebook groups for Taruithorn International (the LJ group is called taruithorn_int, because there's a 15-character limit!) - this is not meant to take anything away from the existing taruithorn groups, but we don't want to bore you with our old fogey talk!
» Banquet music CDs

LadyofAstolat and I brought some CDs along to the banquet in February, but forgot to take them with us at the end.

Does anyone have them?  There were four or five of them, including some Crusades music, something like "music for a Great Castle", and assorted odds and ends.

» bomb
I know this isn't Tolkien-related, but thought I'd let you guys know what's going on in Exeter. We had a bomb go off at lunchtime in a restaurant in the main shopping area. young man with a history of mental illness and a convert to Islam - looks like he was preyed on by the fundamentalist nutcases and manipulated. It's all on the BBC website and I've put stuff in my own LJ about it.

Hope this doesn't put you all off coming to Exeter next year!

Still not quite got my head around the idea of Islamist fundamentalist people setting off bombs in Exeter of all places. I mean, really, WHY?!?!?! What's the point???
» Live role-playing in Oxford
Sorry, this is rather off-topic, but I hope it might be relevant to some people here:

I'm a member of Fools and Heroes, a live role-playing society with branches across the country, and have just formed a new branch in Oxford. Would anybody be interested in giving it a go?Collapse )

If not, I can e-mail them to people.
